Before selecting or designing a CNC drilling machine, the manufacturing requirement should be clearly
defined. Octagon Manufacturing Technology can use this information to develop an appropriate machine
configuration.
Key Information Required
Customers should ideally provide:
- Component drawing or CAD model
- Material grade
- Hole diameter
- Hole depth
- Number of holes
- Hole locations
- Hole-to-hole or angular relationship
- Required tolerance
- Required surface or finish condition
- Production quantity
- Target cycle time
- Loading and unloading method
- Tooling information
- Coolant requirement
- Inspection requirement
- Machine Configuration
From these inputs, the required number of axes, spindle arrangement, spindle power/speed, fixture, stroke,
automation and control architecture can be evaluated.
For example, a component requiring two fixed holes may be suitable for a twin-spindle arrangement, while a
component with multiple variable locations may require servo-controlled positioning.
Deep-Hole Applications
For extended hole depths, the drill diameter-to-depth ratio, coolant method, chip evacuation and tool
guidance become important. These should be considered before final spindle and tooling selection.
A good machine specification therefore begins with the component and process, not simply with a machine
model.
